Israeli forces have killed more than 254 Palestinians in that time, with authorities describing most of the dead as attackers.

Israeli security forces later detained the grand Mufti as crowds gathered in the Old City following the attack.

The American ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, took to Twitter, saying: "Shocked and horrified by the despicable attack".

"Terrorism must be renounced and unconditionally condemned by all", he wrote.

There has been mounting pressure on Israel to re-allow Muslim worshipers in, something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly agreed to do from Sunday. It is the oldest continually used Jewish cemetery in the world.

Al-Aqsa, with its silver-colored dome and vast hall, is located on Temple Mount. Israel, he asserted, was to blame for the rise in violence.

The Israeli authorities shut the area to Muslims gathering for Friday prayers afterwards, drawing a call for resistance from Palestinian religious leaders. Right-wing members of parliament are calling for stepped up measures in light of the incident and that has Palestinians concerned that any such move could signal an eventual shift in the status quo at Al-Aqsa.

In two tweets on Friday afternoon, U.S. peace envoy Jason Greenblatt, who has been meeting with Israeli and Palestinian officials here this week, welcomed Abbas' call to Netanyahu as "important" and condemned praise for the attack by Palestinian militant groups.
