The 27-year-old has signed a three-year-deal at Goodison Park and again links up with manager Ronald Koeman, who coached him at the south-coast club. Including just one year left on his Everton contract and with plenty of Premier League experience.

Rooney insists that everyone wants Barkley to stay at Everton, adding that he feels the England global has the ability to help the team.

Ross Barkley will miss Everton's second overseas trip of pre-season having failed to recover from a groin problem in time for the squad's departure for the Netherlands.

"I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I've now brought him to Everton".

Spurs still probably plan to sign him. "He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that's needed, too".

Azaria is appealing his conviction and military prosecutors are appealing his 18-month jail sentence for being too lenient. It is now assumed that the prosecution will acquiesce to his being sent home for house arrest for the time being.

Speaking about Barkley's future at Everton this week, Ronald Koeman said: "At the moment it is not a clear situation". So if Tottenham really are waiting in the wings but are reluctant to pay what the player wants, it would be refreshing - and smart - to see Barkley make the right move for the good of his career rather than his bank balance. He really hasn't improved that much since breaking into the Everton first team in the 2013-14 season.

Everton departed today for a six-day visit to Holland and Belgium without Barkley, who has entered the final year of his contract.

While not as silky on the ball as Dembele (who completed 84% of his take ons last season) Barkley is also an excellent ball-carrier (66% take on success) and is comfortable when in possession.

Spurs are keen on signing Barkley, and have been for months now.
