Hyundai has introduced a new road auto, i30, which is the first in its performance-oriented N line-up. Its tentative launch in India is expected to be in February 2018. Grip is guaranteed by the 18-inch Michelin or 19-inch Pirelli high-performance Hyundai N tyres.

If you get past your badge snobbery, and you should have by now, the i30 N is stacking up to be serious competition.

While the styling might hint at a more sporty style, the range of engines on offer in Europe are less focussed on performance and more concerned with low emissions, leading to a choice of either a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 87kW or a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a far-from-head 102kW. This output is sent to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission and a front-wheel drivetrain. The 250bhp version accelerates to 100 kmph in 6.4 seconds while the 275bhp lessens the time taken to just 6.1 seconds.

Additionally, the driver can select the rev-matching button on the steering wheel to increase the revs on the engine when shifting from a higher to a lower gear, while the car's Launch Control helps to launch the vehicle as fast as easy possible by controlling engine torque.

Positioned as a slightly more premium offering compared to the more practical regular hatch, Hyundai is hoping to attract the kind of discerning Euro-centric buyers that might find something like a Mercedes-Benz CLA or Audi A5 appealing, but at a more wallet-friendly price. Launch control can be effectively used in N drive mode with ESP switched off.

Customers can choose from a range of powertrains including 1.4-litre 140hp petrol, 1.0-litre 120hp petrol, 1.6-litre 110hp diesel and 1.6-litre 136hp engines.

Hyundai has announced the latest addition to its i30 line up. The i30 Fastback is also 115mm longer than the hatch, which also contributes to a sleeker profile.
