Disabled Amtrak train causing headaches at Penn Station

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it's cautiously optimistic after the first week of major repairs at Penn Station, the busiest train station in the country.

The trouble began when a train from Miami carrying 165 people stalled as it entered Penn Station about 11:50 a.m.

"This seems to be an electrical issue", an Amtrak spokesman said. PATH stations in New Jersey, along with the commuter hub at Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal, are just some of the places that have seen an uptick in commuters since Monday.

When the first rescue train couldn't reach the stalled train, a second locomotive was sent in and towed everyone to safety after about two hours.

A New Jersey Transit train with almost 600 people on board was briefly disabled outside of Penn Station on Saturday afternoon. Amtrak, which owns and operates the station, had been performing the work on nights and weekends and planned to complete it in a few years, but two derailments and other problems this spring persuaded it to step up the pace.

The passengers were stuck while the "rescue train" sent to retrieve the stalled train was also stalled due to power failure.

As we approach the end of week one of summer track repairs at Penn Station, Amtrak says the emergency track work is slightly ahead of schedule.

MTA chairman Joseph Lhota said Friday transit officials have "been able to keep things moving across the system" after the first week of Amtrak's summer-long project to fix and replace tracks and signals.

Saturday's malfunction has nothing to do with the rehab project, officials said.
