He also said the interest remained "very strong" through Wednesday, and the Sox were even in negotiations with a different team Saturday that prompted them to consider scratching Quintana for his final start before the All-Star break against the Rockies. They'll start the second half of the season 5 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

Quintana is now 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA, the worst ERA of his five-year career, but is just a season removed from going 13-12 with a 3.20 ERA. Quintana's arm will give the Cubs a fourth quality starter in the rotation once Kyle Hendricks returns from his injury, and if John Lackey can turn his season around then the rotation will be right back to the level they performed at last season.

"I think about what could have been", he said, "but there's no ideal formula or equation for success at this level".

But which would you prefer to have if you were a GM starting a team: The bolstered Cubs rotation or the White Sox dream cache of youth? The starters' ERA on the big club is 4.66.

The Cubs will slot Quintana into a rotation that has struggled this season, posting a 4.66 ERA on the season (ranking 17th in baseball and eighth in the National League, right ahead of the Phillies).

The Chicago Cubs appear to be willing to pull out all the stops in hopes of repeating as World Series champions.

Quintana is under contract for the next three-and-a-half seasons for about $34 million (although that could go up a bit if he meets incentives for his option years).

Disabled Amtrak train causing headaches at Penn Station
A New Jersey Transit train with almost 600 people on board was briefly disabled outside of Penn Station on Saturday afternoon. The passengers were stuck while the "rescue train" sent to retrieve the stalled train was also stalled due to power failure.

But Quintana was one of the most well-liked players in the White Sox clubhouse, and the finality of the pitcher's long-rumored trade hit some players hard. The Sox sent left-hander Jose Quintana to the Cubs for prospects Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose and Bryant Flete.

It was the first July goodbye for the Chicago White Sox. In 42 games with Myrtle Beach, he hit.271 with eight homers and 32 RBIs, with 23 runs scored.

"Any deal we make is about maximizing the future of the White Sox", Hahn said.

Add in the fact that Jimenez, 20, is the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball according to ESPN's Keith Law and Baseball America and you have the potential for a deal that will be scrutinized for years to come. For his major-league career, all with the Sox since 2012, he is 50-54 with a 3.51 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.

Well, on Thursday we got an answer: You deal for Jose Quintana.

In 2001, the New York Mets traded two-time All-Star and six-time gold glove victor Robin Ventura, of grand-slam single fame, to the New York Yankees for former Rookie of the Year and three-time All-Star David Justice.

He played in a few rehab games with Baltimore's minor league teams this week and fared well.
