The 17-year-old South Korean was poised to become the second amateur to win the biggest title in women's golf, joining 1967 champion Catherine Lacoste of France.

Park, who has four top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour this year, was seven shots off the pace midway through the championship before a 67 on Saturday moved her into contention.

Overnight leader Feng had a disappointing final round that ended in a triple-bogey on the 18 - seeing her take fall back to a share of fifth at six-under-par with Carlota Ciganda and Jeongeun Lee.

The second-place finish proved to be bittersweet for Choi, however, as her amateur status meant she missed out on the £413,000 second prize.

South Korean women's golf domination presented a new face on Sunday in U.S. Women's Open victor Park Sung-hyun, whose long-hitting and ultra-aggressive style set her apart from many compatriots.

Park's compatriot, amateur Hye Jin Choi, finished second after a one-under 71 to be nine under, while another two South Koreans, Mi Jung Hur (68) and So Yeon Ryu (70), shared third spot at seven under.

As the poker-faced Park made her way from the 18th green to the scoring tent, she paused to wave and bow towards U.S. President Donald Trump, who looked down from his bullet-proof, glass-enclosed private box. McCarron made up a six-shot deficit in the final round to capture his first major on the over-50 tour. So fans gave me that nickname that I just focus on attack and aggressive.

NZ golfer Lydia Ko makes spectacular comeback in second round at US women's Open

"She is definitely an experienced player", the teenager said.

She is a clear leader for Rookie of the Year honors, and Sirak notes she could become the first woman since 1978 to win Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Then, trouble struck. Choi tried to be too flawless with her tee shot on the 139-yard hole and deposited it right into the lake. She is the eighth South Korean victor of the U.S. Women's Open.

Although Feng makes it a habit of not paying attention to the leaderboard, she sensed she had fallen behind by the 18th hole because Park had already finished to a roar by the time Feng addressed her approach shot. But she blasted out into the fairway, dropped her approach three feet from the cup then sank the putt to conclude a one-under 71 third round.

PGA EUROPE: Rafa Cabrera Bello birdied the first hole of a playoff with Callum Shinkwin to win the Scottish Open in Irvine, his first title in 5½ years.

"I was putting well on the back nine today. That's how it probably came and I'm happy for it". "Based on that good experience that I had last year, I think I was able to garner the championship this year". "I'll keep trying. I'm going to do the same things and see what happens", she said.

Bad weather then forced a lengthy delay, with some players still to finish their opening round when darkness forced an end to proceedings shortly after 8.30pm local time.
