"'I am 100 percent sure the president and his campaign did not engage in a criminal conspiracy with a foreign intelligence apparatus'".

Akhmetshin has told media outlets that he once worked in Soviet counterintelligence, but only during his two years in the Russian military in the mid-1980s. Akhmetshin himself later confirmed that he was indeed at the meeting.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and current White House senior adviser, and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort also attended the meeting.

Veselnitskaya said the Trump campaign would need to research it more. They had been told that Veselnitskaya was a "Russian government lawyer".

Akhmetshin said Veselnitskaya brought with her a plastic folder with printed-out documents that detailed what she believed was the flow of illicit funds to the Democratic National Committee.

However, Veselnitskaya has insisted that she did not attend the meeting as a representative of the Kremlin. After that, Trump Jr. lost interest, according to Akhmetshin.

Ahkmetshin told AP that he did not consider the meeting to be "substantive" and had been expecting a "more serious" conversation. However, the participants meant to discuss United States adoption policies of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act, but not sensitive information related to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, according to Trump Jr.'s statement. He remarked that the recent reaction to the meeting is "a little bit ridiculous and overplayed", but said he would have done things differently.

The emails revealed that the President's son was told the "Crown prosecutor of Russia" had offered information that "would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father". The email exchange included a statement from Goldstone that the source had "very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

She said that Trump Jr. said at the end of the meeting that her information was "interesting", but there was nothing they could do to help her with it.

He did not notify authorities of the approach.

President Donald Trump Saturday announced through Twitter that the stock market is at an all time high - "despite the Russian hoax story" - and that job numbers are looking good. "And honestly, I think the press made a very big deal over something that really a lot of people would do", the president said.

The Russian government has denied any involvement in or knowledge of the June 2016 meeting. "He told me specifically he was not working for the Russian government, and in fact laughed when I asked him that question", Futerfas told NBC News.
