As the world marks World Emoji Day, Apple has revealed its newest ones that focus on the weird and wonderful.

Also in celebration of World Emoji Day, the App Store will be highlighting apps to create or do fun things with emoji, and iTunes Movies is featuring emoji in place of select movie titles.

"Bearded person", "breastfeeding", "sandwich" and "coconut" were among the new illustrations. Other new emoji include animals and mythical creatures, like T-Rex, a zebra, a zombie, and an elf, as well as a star-struck smiley face and an exploding head smiley face.

Apple also notes the continued expansion of differing skin tones, stating that 'the new emoji make it easier for users to express themselves with greater diversity'.

The World Emoji Day website says the day is celebrated on 17 July because the day is famously displayed on the iOS Calendar Emoji.

And that usually takes many months after a new standard is announced. The emoji will come to iOS, macOS and watchOS later this year.
