Most of the complaints come from staff at the group's San Francisco headquarters.

In the post, Fowler, a site-reliability engineer, detailed a horrifying year in which her sexual harassment claims were ignored by Uber's human resources department. Based on Perkins Coie's report, action has been initiated in 58 cases, and further investigations are underway.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick hired former Attorney General Eric Holder and Tammy Albarran, both partners at law firm Covington & Burling, to look into the company's culture. Uber is expected to discuss it with staff next week, a person familiar with the matter said.

Uber has also hired former United States attorney general Eric Holder and his law firm Covington & Burling to carry out a separate investigation into the company's culture. Fowler said she later discovered others had spoken up internally about similar treatment and Uber did little more than issue a warning.

The military coalition had earlier said that one Afghan soldier had been killed and another wounded in the incident . A spokeswoman for the German forces said that "according to what we know right now, no Germans were affected".

In addition to the above, a separate investigation by former USA attorney general Eric Holder is under way. "Worry that the company has this bad reputation and they want to make it better, that's what I've heard from people within the company", Kerr said.

Fowler's direct manager had already been fired, as well as many others, before the news of today's latest spate of firing revelations and Perkins Coie involvement, which was reported yesterday by Recode.

2017 has not been good to the Uber company with weekly reports on the company's litigation and regulation troubles, but also their struggles to prevent sexual harassment from their drivers. Despite this, Uber board member Arianna Huffington denied that sexism was a systemic problem at the transportation network.

In a separate announcement, Uber, which is valued at almost $70bn (£54bn) and has 14,000 employees, said it has hired Apple marketing executive Bozoma Saint John to improve the company's brand image. In February, former Uber engineer Susan Fowler said in a blog post that managers and human resources officers had not punished her manager after she reported his unwanted sexual advances. A lawsuit by Google alleging trade-secret theft by Uber's recently terminated head of Uber's self-driving program also could jeopardize an IPO.
