Trump not under investigation in Russian interference in US election, says lawyer

President Donald Trump angrily decried as a "distraction" the "witch hunt" against him Sunday, as his lawyer insisted the U.S. leader was not under criminal investigation in the sweeping probe of Russian meddling in American elections.

"The president issued that tweet on social media because of the report in "The Washington Post" from five anonymous sources...alleging that the president was under investigation in this purported, expanded probe", Sekulow said.

There have been multiple news reports and a tweet from Trump himself on Friday that began with: "I am being investigated".

The Washington Post story cited five officials who had been briefed on interview requests from special counsel Robert Mueller with three top intelligence officials to see if Trump had attempted to obstruct justice. He can not in a Twitter statement include all of that in there.

Appearing on a series of morning news programs, attorney Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, said, "Let me be clear here, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

"Witch hunt' is how Trump characterizes the probe into Russia's election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates".

Both Coats and Rogers declined before the Senate intelligence committee earlier this month to answer questions about their conversations with Trump, but both said they had never felt urged by Trump to intervene in the Russian Federation probes.

"The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

Sekulow, asked if President Trump meant it when he said he would testify under oath, said he hasn't discussed that with the president.

"The President is not a subject or target of an investigation". The White House has used a memo he wrote to justify Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, but that Trump action may now be part of the probe.

"Trump, who only a day earlier had called for a more civil tone in Washington after a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, fired off several more tweets in the afternoon voicing disbelief that he was under scrutiny while his "crooked" Democratic opponent in last year's election, Hillary Clinton, escaped prosecution in relation to her use of a private email server while secretary of state".

"They want to lay the foundation to discredit whatever Bob Mueller comes up with", Schiff said.

Asked if Trump's social media commentary may be created to intimidate Rosenstein or Mueller, Senator Marco Rubio said "I have no basis to make a decision on what his intent is" but added that the tweets "in no way" will impede the work of the investigation.

Comey made the existence of this investigation public in a March hearing before the House intelligence committee. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said on "Fox News Sunday" that it would be a "disaster" for Trump to fire Mueller or Rosenstein, or to nudge the latter to recuse himself in an effort to slow down the investigation.
