A northern California woman was arrested for stripping her young daughter naked and then repeatedly hitting her during what she said was an exorcism to rid the child of demons.

Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said on Friday that the incident took place at Centerville beach near Ferndale, going by the description of a 911 call. Kimberly Felder, 45, was arrested, with police claiming she was attempting to "cleanse" her daughter.

The Sacramento Bee reports around 10 to 12 people were witnessing the attack on the girl, but only one person stepped up to assist. When officers arrived at the scene, they separated Felder from the girl and handcuffed the woman. He said she continued to hit her daughter in the head with a piece of driftwood while he tried to restrain her.

"The mother had stripped the child naked and was shoving handfuls of sand in the child's eyes and into the child's mouth", the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release, according to Lost Coast Outpost.

Felder has been arrested on charges of attempted homicide, child abuse, aggravated mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon.

"The worst thing was when we got the child away and into the sheriff's truck, she said people drove by and nobody stopped", Marciel said to the AP.

Reece Oxford joins Borussia Monchengladbach on loan
West Ham prospect Reece Oxford has arrived in Germany ahead of a proposed loan move to Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach . Oxford, who can play in central midfield or defence, signed a new four-and-a-half year contract with West Ham in December.

He said Felder took a toxicology test to determine whether she was under the influence of drugs, but the results have not returned yet.

"John Marciel further assisted by tending to the child while deputies controlled Felder", the sheriff's office said. According to police the mother stated "she was trying to remove the demons from the child".

He added: "When you see something like this, it shakes your foundation and faith in people".

Authorities said if it were not for Marciel's heroism and swift actions, the girl would have been killed.

The child, who wasn't named, reportedly sustained "severe damage to her right ear" during the attack, and was sent to a hospital for treatment. "The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office would like to offer special thanks for his assistance".
