Officer injured, San Francisco mall closed following fight

San Francisco's Westfield mall was placed on temporary lockdown Sunday after a fight broke out leading to a massive police response.

The first officers to arrive called for backup, Officer Robert Rueca said.

To help control the situation the mall was closed.

The fight didn't spread onto the streets, but officers were forced to close the mall early.

Some officers were seen struggling to maintain order during the melee and even being attacked by suspects.

Police did not immediately disclose the details of what happened, but dozens of officers remained outside the mall on Market and Fifth streets at 8 p.m., at least an hour after the incident. Some local reports said a number of people were detained in the wake of the violent clash.

There was no indication what caused the brawl or exactly how many people were involved.

It was clear from various videos that several officers were assaulted, police said, adding that several lof the officers were injured.

The shopping center was expected to resume normal operations and reopen on time Monday morning.
