Donald Trump: It's a witch hunt against me

"And so he was reluctant to make the statement that I made", Comey said.

Baker declined to comment.

The President's tweet sparked immediate speculation about the future of the official, Rod Rosenstein, who wrote a memo recommending Comey be ousted and also later approved the appointment of a special counsel - Robert Mueller - to lead the Russian Federation probe.

Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump fired him to undermine the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

U.S. President Donald Trump has taken to his favorite social media platform to assail reports that a special counsel is investigating whether he tried to obstruct justice.

But Feinstein's push to pursue whether obstruction of justice was at play brought a swift objection from the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, who sits on the Judiciary Committee.

"It could potentially have some collusion components to it", Burr said Thursday of interviewing Coats and Rogers, who appeared before the panel Monday night in a classified setting. McQuade was referencing the fallout after President Richard Nixon fired the Watergate independent special prosecutor, Archibald Cox, which triggered mass resignations within the Justice Department.

Rosenstein addressed dealing with political considerations around investigations during an interview with ABC2 News in Baltimore earlier this year, arguing that "it is not difficult" for him to separate politics and the way he prosecutes cases. "In fact we could end up harming the investigation".

Which may be true, but Trump is clearly not naive.

President Trump acknowledges he's being investigated
But soon after the abrupt termination, Trump told NBC News that he had been going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendations. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in USA elections and possible Russian ties to the Trump campaign.

Kushner has been given a wide range of responsibilities in the Trump White House, from restructuring the federal government to achieving Middle East peace.

Trump administration officials often say, typically while pointing to the performance of stock markets, businesses feel more confident under Trump. "This is our oversight responsibility".

The former director of the Department of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, is scheduled to appear June 21 in an open session before the House of Representatives' intelligence committee, which is looking into Russian activity during the 2016 USA election campaign.

"That's kind of a little ridiculous", Cornyn said.

Donald Trump has told his Twitter followers they are witnessing the "single greatest witch hunt in American history".

"As deputy attorney general, you are more involved in policy making, but in terms of the principles of the department and how we conduct our investigations and who we prosecute, those decisions are going to be made in the same way they have always been made", he said. "We are required to submit a budget within 60 days of the appointment for the current fiscal year and submit it for the Attorney General's review and approval". "That has nothing to do with Russian Federation, as much as it has to do with how the Department of Justice is being run and you know, all of that stuff is in our bailiwick".

Adding to the confusion is the fact that the special investigation is being led by another former FBI director.

News accounts this week said Trump was considering firing Mueller from his special counsel role, but the White House eventually said he does not plan to.

One memo recounts a February request from Trump, during a private meeting in the Oval Office, that Comey end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Comey testified in a Senate hearing last week that he believed he was sacked "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Mueller also has expansive powers to investigate any matters that develop from his initial investigation.
