Celtics trade first overall pick to Philly

Philadelphia completed its trade for the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, landing the pick from the Boston Celtics on Monday in a move that clears the way for the 76ers to grab guard Markelle Fultz.

The Sixers are fully expected to take Washington guard Markelle Fultz with the top pick. If the Lakers' 2018 first-round pick is No. 1 or is No. 6 or later, the Sixers instead convey to the Celtics the rights to the more favorable of the Sixers' own 2019 first-round pick or the Sacramento Kings' 2019 first-round pick, provided that the more favorable pick is not the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Ainge added, "We'll get a player we like in addition to further assets". The Bulls would likely be interested in numerous Celtics' assets including the team's No.3 pick this year, the Nets' first round pick next year, the Lakers' first round pick next year, and a few players from the team's core (Brown/Crowder/Marcus Smart/Avery Bradley).

Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals over 25 games last season for the University of Washington Huskies, who went 9-22.

Philadelphia fans and media in favor of the trade say Fultz would mesh well with Simmons.

"I'll do whatever it takes to help any team I go to win", Fultz said. Philadelphia chose Ben Simmons with first pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Allen Iverson in 1996 and Doug Collins in 1973.

"The odds are in your favor at No. 1, more so than in any other position in the draft, that the player chosen may end up being a franchise-level player", Colangelo said.

If Collins and other Republicans stand up now, that's the kind of process that could get underway. The Senate's GOP majority hasn't released its own plan yet, and it's unclear if they will.

The Lakers are giving strong consideration to UCLA's Lonzo Ball, Kansas' Josh Jackson and Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox with the No. 2 pick.

For now, Boston has seven first-round picks in the next three years. If he becomes the star that some project him to be, the Celtics and Ainge specifically will be critiqued and questioned for passing on him for years to come. Ainge said it was "possible" that Boston could make another deal before the draft, but described the swap as "a jump-start" for the Celtics.

For the Sixers, a team who has been acquiring draft picks and "trusting the process" for years now, this trade is precisely the type of move the team had been preparing to make. " ... I think this is somebody they really wanted and stepped up to get".

Colangelo chose not to disclose a name, but Fultz is the consensus No. 1 pick of the draft.

"I think even before the lottery, we've been evaluating these kids for a couple years, and we felt like it was very close with the top handful of players, and we still feel that way", Ainge said in a conference call Monday after the trade was formally announced.

Griffin's departure comes on the anniversary of the Cavs' dramatic Game 7 win over Golden State, capping a historic comeback that gave Cleveland its first major professional sports championship since 1964.

The 19-year-old made 41.3 percent of his shots from the college 3-point line.
