Boeing unveils plans for new version of 737 Max

After rumours of the 737 Max 10X's pending go-ahead have swirled for weeks, Boeing has scheduled a press conference at 10 am on 19 June in the auditorium of the Air and Space museum at Le Bourget, a more spacious venue than Boeing's media chalet.

Airbus has clinched a deal for 100 single-aisle A320neo planes in its first big move at the Paris Air Show, where the European planemaker is jockeying with Boeing for orders amid burgeoning competition from China.

As per reports by Bloomberg, India-based airline Jet Airways (BOM:532617) is negotiating to buy as many as 50 737 MAX 10s, which would worth $5.6 billion.

Airlines can also expect increased aircraft availability as the A380plus features longer maintenance check intervals, a reduced six-year check downtime, and system improvements. This increase in the takeoff weight will allow the flexibility of carrying up to 80 more passengers or flying 300 nautical miles (nm) further.

The deal could be announced at the Paris Airshow and follows a competition against rival Boeing's 737 MAX.

Boeing is betting on the Max 10 to carve out sales and stem customer defections to Airbus's A321neo, which has racked up a considerable sales lead since being launched three years ago and still has room for upgrades.

Boeing wants everyone to know it didn't cheat on the video: "This is a real video of our Boeing 737 MAX 9 and 787-10 Dreamliner being flown by our test pilots". It is expected to cost a bit more than the 737 Max-9, which runs at $119 million according to list prices.

The cumulative changes, which Boeing reckons it has achieved on a shoestring budget, are resonating well with customers, Kevin McAllister, who heads Boeing's commercial airplanes arm, said. They compete with Airbus planes in the A320-neo family, aiming at a similar short- to mid-range market.

The 190-230-seat Boeing 737 MAX 10 is created to plug a gap at the top end of Boeing's single-aisle range after strong sales of the competing Airbus A321neo. In another boost for a defence project, French President Emmanuel Macron flew into the show on an Airbus A400M military transporter in his first official engagement since winning a parliamentary majority in elections on Sunday.

Several aerospace firms are meanwhile expected to announce contracts for aftermarket services - a growing area for the industry thanks to powerful new data analytics.
