Thousands turned up to witness the tribute as Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck turned on the bat signal, which lit up the night sky in downtown LA. Everyone waited in anticipation as Garcetti and Beck did the honors at exactly 9:19 p.m., projecting the green Bat-signal onto City Hall's tower.

A yellow oval complete with the bat motif used in the TV series, the signal is traditionally used in the DC Universe when Batman is called to save Gotham City from the various fiends wreaking havoc. With a career that spanned five decades and the iconic role of Batman under his belt, the actor has always been remembered primarily for his time as the Caped Crusader, even as he moved on to other roles such as playing the mayor of Quahog in Family Guy.

"He's a legend", said Chad Evatt, a 30-year-old costume designer who made a Riddler costume to wear to the event.

Before the episode begins, a special tribute card will appear on screen honoring West's life and contributions to the show.

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt believes proximity is more important than form when it comes to call-ups to the British and Irish Lions squad during the tour.

Family Guy is now on summer hiatus, but FOX will re-air an episode from earlier this season that heavily featured Mayor West. In stark contrast to latter day depictions of Batman, West's version of the Detective Comics star was a colorful, optimistic figure that earned him the nickname, "Bright Knight".

After debuting on January 12, 1966, Batman was an immediate hit and was nominated for the Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series in its first year, though it lost to The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Tributes were also paid by Burt Ward, who played Batman's sidekick Robin alongside West.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, West was surrounded by his wife, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren when he passed away.
