Laura Ashley Murphy, 22, of Salisbury, was the driver of the black 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan involved in the crash. She was pronounced deceased on the scene. The 14-month-old boy with her is still undergoing treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Maryland State Police are handling the crash investigation. That driver's name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. He was the sole occupant, driving a silver 2016 Mercedes SUV. He was flown to Shock Trauma, police said.

A third vehicle was also involved in the crash and was driven by Anthony Stanley, 59, of Bowie, Md. His 2016 Nissan 350-Z sustained minor damage but he was unhurt. He was uninjured in the crash.

The crash occurred about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Route 50 in Annapolis.

Murphy's vehicle crashed head-on with the Mercedes SUV, which came to rest on the side of the highway in a wooded area.

Traffic is now open to westbound traffic, but authorities say eastbound United States 50 could be closed for several more hours.

The Shock Trauma Go Team was flown to the scene to assist in the rescue operation. Police say his auto was hit head-on by the vehicle Murphy was driving.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team has responded and will be conducting a detailed crash reconstruction. The Maryland State Highway Administration tweeted that the closures could be in place for hours.

During the rescue, traffic was routed off of Route 50 eastbound onto Rowe Boulevard and across the Naval Academy Bridge then back onto 50 past the accident scene, said Cpl. Route 50 eastbound is expected to remain closed through the rush hour as the investigation and clean-up continues.
