It's always been said it's generally safer to use a Mac, simply by the virtue of there being fewer in the world meaning hackers can't be bothered to make viruses targeting them.

"It's good hygiene for information security and this is a ideal example this week of not enough of us are doing that on a regular basis", said Michael Legary. who helped create innovation alley in Winnipeg and now works with the city. "The federal government has really dropped the ball on cooperation between the tech companies and the government agencies". Russian Federation was hit harder than any other country during last week's "WannaCry" attacks, though damage appears to have been kept to a minimum.

The initial attack, known as "WannaCry", paralyzed computers running Britain's hospital network, Germany's national railway, and scores of other companies and government agencies around the world.

Two months after Microsoft issued its security patch, thousands of computers remained vulnerable to the WannaCry attack. The vulnerability had been stolen from the NSA and then dumped onto the internet by a hacking group. It's high time that health services take protective measures, inlcuding updating the systems with the latest versions as well as imparting the right training and tools to workers to mitigate this vulnerability or overcome such attacks in the future. The WannaCry software infected computers operating on Microsoft and displayed messages demanding users to pay $300 in bitcoin - type of digital currency widely used online.

Computers around the globe were hacked beginning on Friday using a security flaw in Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, an older version that was no longer given mainstream tech support by the USA giant. "Following this, Microsoft had sent patches in its update in March itself to counter this particular form of threats", Udhav told TNM.

"It isn't clear that there has been a harm to consumers", he said.

"Small business owners should be pro-active about their cyber security in the wake of this ransomware campaign affecting computers around the world", Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Cyber Security Dan Tehan said in an after hours statement.

"There are some rules and some policy that can be introduced where everybody knows how the government is going to handle these certain situations", said Greg Martin, CEO of San Francisco cybersecurity firm JASK and a former cybersecurity adviser to the FBI, Secret Service and NASA. Do not enable macros, cybersecurity company Symantec says. "I don't think there is one".

"We believe the recent ransomware attack could accelerate the Windows upgrade cycle for enterprises, which would drive further upside to Office 365 Commercial MAUs [monthly active users] beyond what is now factored into our estimates", he added.

The U.K. government's cyber office put it succinctly: "T$3 he way these attacks work means that compromises of machines and networks that have already occurred may not yet have been detected, and that existing infections from the malware can spread within networks".
