Trump says Russia probe will reveal no collusion with his campaign

Dianne Feinstein wrote Comey on Wednesday.

It was a concession by the Trump administration, which had resisted calls from Democrats to turn the investigation over to outside counsel.

Kessler's latest book is "The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents".

A date has not been set for the public hearing.

Comey said he had found out that White House chief of staff Andrew Card and White House counsel Alberto Gonzales were headed to Ashcroft's hospital room to get the sick attorney general to OK the program.

Q. What's the difference between a special counsel and a special prosecutor or an independent counsel?

"He's a private citizen now", Bash said, "so he can kind of do what he wants". Though Rosenstein, like Comey, serves at the pleasure of the president and could be removed without cause at any time, Levitt cautioned that doing so in order to jeopardize Mueller's probe would come at a high political cost. Investigations already underway in the Senate Intelligence Committee and House Intelligence Committee and other panels will progress.

Republicans have largely stood behind Trump as the FBI and congressional investigations into Russia's election meddling intensified. Spokespeople declined to comment further.

"The FBI's handling of recent politically charged investigations has eroded the public's trust in its ability to be independent". That language suggests Mueller could also explore whether the firing of Comey - who publicly revealed investigation's existence to Congress in March - and a conversation Comey has said he had with the president weeks earlier represented efforts to obstruct or derail the FBI's work.

The special counsel law grants Mueller the authority to probe possible attempts to stymie his investigation. That was followed by allegations Trump asked Comey in February to end his probe of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

"As I've said many times before, the American people deserve to know how Russian Federation attempted to meddle in our democratic process".

President Trump also responded, saying "There was no collusion. and I look forward to this matter concluding quickly".

The Department of Justice has appointed a special counsel to take over its probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

When I know that the battle is lost, I don't fight the battle. I would like to give more rests. "I hope he goes soft on us". I hope you don't kill me when you see my team.

Trump told them the appointment would allow them to refer questions to Mueller, giving them space to focus on policies such as tax reform.

"You couldn't pick a better person to lead this investigation", Kessler, who has interviewed Mueller for three of his books on the FBI, told Newsmax in an exclusive interview.

Referencing a similar sentiment from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Crowley praised Mueller. "Director Mueller will still be in the chain of command under the Trump-appointed leadership of the Justice Department".

"I believe Mueller will be independent, he will be thorough and he will be fair and he's not going to be easily swayed", said Elijah Cummings of Maryland, top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

Some Republicans joined Democrats in breathing a sigh of relief Wednesday at news that deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had appointed a special counsel to lead the investigation into whether Trump's campaign had any ties to Russian Federation.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, cheered the choice, writing on twitter: "Impeccable credentials".

But Rep. Peter King of NY is expressing concern over the wide purview special prosecutors have.

News of the special counsel announcement was closely held.

The independent counsel was a position established by a law that has expired, in part because of dissatisfaction over the independent investigations of Bill Clinton.

"This was a necessary and long-overdue step by the Department of Justice that moves us closer to getting to the truth".

After news broke of Mueller's appointment, Bharara tweeted: "Reminder: Mueller was FBI Director when he & then-DAG James Comey together intervened at Ashcroft's bedside in 2004 & threatened to resign".

"The issue of Russian meddling in our presidential election must be investigated fully and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller is well qualified to oversee this probe".
