Comey, who was known to keep a paper trail of sensitive meetings, chronicled the president's request in a memo he produced soon after the conversation, according to a Comey associate who reviewed the document and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

The White House swiftly denied the Tuesday reports first published by the New York Times, saying that the president "never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn". "He is a good guy".

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", the president told Comey, according to the memo, quoted by media.

"Decisions about what President Trump discusses with anybody that he has in the White House is a matter for President Trump", May told a news conference when asked whether Trump's disclosure had made her reluctant to share intelligence with him.

Republican US Representative Jason Chaffetz, chairman of a House of Representatives oversight committee, said his committee "is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists".

"The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr Comey", the official said.

Asked Tuesday if he is concerned about White House credibility being undermined, Spicer said "no one would ever want that". "As President I wanted to share with Russian Federation (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety", Trump wrote in a series of tweets.

This comes hot on the heels of reports that Trump shared classified information with Russian Federation about Isis. "The country is being tested in unprecedented ways".

The panel's top Democrat, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a constant Trump critic, called the allegation of Trump pressure on Comey "explosive" and said "it appears like a textbook case of criminal obstruction of justice".

Veteran Republican Senator John McCain warned that reports Trump divulged to Russian Federation information provided by a United States ally "sends a troubling signal to America's allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future".

Israel has yet to acknowledge claims from US officials that it was the source of the highly classified information about an Islamic State plot that Trump divulged to Russian diplomats.

The newspaper's reporting was as specific as possible without identifying the country that provided the information to the United States intelligence services. Conflicting comments from administration officials regarding Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem's Western Wall have only added to the concerns. He offered to furnish a "record" of the Trump-diplomats meeting in the Oval Office if the White House desired it.

The United States is Israel's most important ally, providing it with more than US$3 billion in defence aid each year.

"In the context of that discussion, what the president discussed with the foreign minister was wholly appropriate to that conversation and is consistent with the routine sharing of information between the president and any leaders with whom he's engaged", McMaster said. And legal experts say it could be hard to prove the president crossed a line. "He wasn't briefed on the source and method of the information either".

And while Comey himself has been silent, his associates have been exposing intriguing details of his encounters with Trump.

He is said to have told the Russians: "I get great intel".

"When Trump fired Comey, he had authority to do that".

Comey had been overseeing investigations into the Trump campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation to tilt the 2016 election in his favor.
