This Restaurant Just Beat In-N-Out for America's Favorite Burger Chain

Five Guys Burgers and Fries beat In-N-Out Burger as the burger restaurant brand of the year, according to The Harris Poll, a market research firm. For the past two years, West Coast favorite In-N-Out burger was ranked number one and Five Guys ― which started in Virginia ― was at number two.

Five Guys are for everyone. This is the 29th year Harris has measured the strength of brands, including travel and finance.

Burger juggernaut McDonald's could only make it to number seven in the rankings, behind smaller operators including Wendy's at four and Culver's at five.

McDonald's earned top marks for familiarity.

"Restaurants continue to adapt to the millennial lifestyle, and advancements in ordering methods such as Starbucks" mobile app and Chick-fil-A's "Mom Valet' are likely influencing millennials' higher brand equity scores", Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll, said in a statement.

The first Five Guys opened in 1986, in Arlington, Va.

Five Guys, which is now headquartered in Lorton, Va., now has over 1,000 locations in the U.S. The chain is known for its burgers, grilled in front of customers and topped with limitless toppings, and fries that are cooked in peanut oil.

In-N-Out opened its first drive-thru in 1948, and has more than 300 locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas and OR - but not Colorado.

The eagerly-anticipated opening of the popular burger chain is certain to attract the crowds over the Bank Holiday weekend and beyond. Today, that figure has grown to 68%, with Five Guys reaching 81% familiarity with Gen Z and millennials.
