Tad Cummins Gets Indicted By Federal Grand Jury

WKRN reports that Cummins, 50, was indicted on obstruction of justice and "transporting a minor across state lines for the goal of engaging in criminal sexual conduct".

A federal grand jury in Nashville, Tennessee, returned a two-count indictment against former teacher Tad Cummins on Wednesday. Cummins and the 15-year old had been the subject of a nationwide search by law enforcement, after leaving the Columbia, Tenn. area on March 13, 2017.

Cummins faces up to life in prison if convicted. Authorities said at the time he apparently had lured her into a auto outside a restaurant.

He told authorities he had sex with the girl most nights, during the 38 days he was on the run with her.

Cummins also faces state charges of sexual contact with a minor and aggravated kidnapping, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said last month.

He was suspended from a local high school after some students informed the authorities they had seen Cummins kissing Thomas in the classroom, said a report.

Cummins' California attorney has noted that he has no prior criminal history and argued that he did not coerce, force or threaten Elizabeth - which her family disputes.

The girl's father has said he believed his daughter had been "brainwashed" by Cummins.
