Old Chums: Mueller, Comey Have Had Long, Close Relationship

President Donald Trump on Thursday denied ever asking FBI Director James Comey to back off his agency's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, and the role played by former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

But said he respects the decision Wednesday (May 17) by his Justice Department to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel for a probe that has enveloped the White House in a political storm.

President Trump on Thursday denied ever asking FBI Director James B. Comey to back off his agency's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, as well as into the role played by former national security adviser Michael Flynn. "I hope you can let this go", Trump reportedly told Comey during a private meeting, because Flynn is a "good guy".

"There's been no collusion between, certainly myself, and my campaign, but I can only speak for myself, and the Russians", Trump said Thursday at a news conference with the president of Colombia.

But during the news conference, Trump contradicted both his own account and that of Rosenstein.

Trump also changed his story once again about the circumstances surrounding Comey's firing, returning again to the White House's original rationale that he based his decision on Rosenstein's recommendation.

"There was no collusion", he said.

Trump blasted that decision, echoing his Thursday morning tweets and comments he made over lunch with network news anchors that the Russian Federation investigation is a "witch hunt" that "divides the country".

Even so, there's a growing sense in Russian Federation that Trump's opponents in the US political establishment are determined to oust him, said Oleg Morozov, a former senior Kremlin official who now serves on the global affairs committee of the upper house of Russia's parliament.

Oil prices fall further amid oversupply fears
Money managers have already cut their net long positions, a bet on a further price rally, by a third in the last two months. At the next meeting on May 25, the cartel will decide whether to expand their agreement to lower crude production.

The president's frustration has been building since he abruptly fired Comey.

While Russia assumed Trump would impose his authority on Washington within six months, the situation hasn't improved, a top Kremlin official said.

That news conference was held on the same day news broke that the White House was stonewalling the House Oversight Committee's probe into Flynn's security clearance application by refusing to turn over documents pertaining to his security clearance.

President Juan Manuel Santos is seeking Trump's support for a peace accord Colombia signed past year with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

Bipartisan lawmakers had criticized Comey for his handling of investigations related to Trump and his electoral opponent Hillary Clinton.

"It shows we're a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country", Trump told the group.

"We want to bring this great country of ours together", he continued.

He added, "When I made that decision, I actually thought that it would be a bipartisan decision because you look at all of the people on the Democratic side, not only the Republican side, that were saying such awful things about Director Comey".
