Key moments of Trump-Comey clash and what's come after

The details of Comey's notes of the meeting were first reported by The New York Times.

Some Republicans also called for action, asking Comey to speak to Congress and demanding that any memos or recordings of his conversations with the president be presented to them. "I think it requires somebody like me, a Republican, to call Comey before the Judiciary Committee to let him explain that conversation", Graham said, adding that he doesn't believe that Trump is the subject or target of any investigation regarding possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Flynn resigned the day before the February 14 meeting, after it was revealed he apparently had lied to his about the nature of his contacts with Russia's ambassador.

Trump abruptly fired Comey on Tuesday and later said Comey was a "showboat" and "grandstander" who was not doing a good job.

Both the House and Senate intelligence committees are investigating the alleged ties between Trump's campaign aides and Russian Federation. "The president has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", according to a White House statement issued after the reports emerged. "I hope you can let this go", the reports cited Trump as telling Comey, based on accounts of people who had seen the memo. "He wrote a number of memos, a great many if not all were about contacts with Trump - particularly the ones that made him feel uneasy".

Trump also admitted that the FBI's investigation concerning Russian interference in the presidential election and possible collusion by Trump's campaign team was part of his decision to remove Comey. The Utah Republican added that it's "not necessarily the best idea" for the president to secretly record conversations in the White House without his guests' knowledge. Trump asked Rosenstein to write a memo on concerns about Comey which made it appear that the president was following Rosenstein's recommendation (though the letter did not in fact recommend getting rid of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director).

The explosive new development on Tuesday followed a week of tumult at the White House after Trump fired Comey and then discussed sensitive national security information about Islamic State with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Nikki Haley hits back at Putin
Analysts said the test flight, if conducted on a normal rather than a high trajectory, would have travelled at least 4,000km. Haley also reaffirmed the security commitment to South Korea and Japan.

Rogers was a former chairman of the House intelligence committee before becoming a CNN national security commentator and has the endorsement of the FBI Agents Association. Members of both parties are calling for Trump to turn over the Comey tapes if they exist, and the move could further complicate Trump's efforts to push through a quick confirmation of a replacement for Comey.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Sunday found only 29% of Americans approved of Comey's firing, while 78% support an independent commission or special prosecutor to investigate Russia's interference in the election. The blowback against the firing of Comey angered the increasingly frustrated president, who made the decision after consulting only a small group of advisers, anxious the news would leak out. "Unless Blum has a disease that makes him say genuine things in a sarcastic voice, that was also a very stupid thing to say".

Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, was investigating corrupt Russian businessmen and Trump associate Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price - fired by Trump.

In the "tumult of this time", Bharara asked: "Are there still public servants who are prepared to say no to the president?"

"The key here, of course, is getting some of our Republican colleagues to join us", Schumer said.

Sometimes I think newspapers should disregard their stylebooks and identify the senior senator from SC as Lindsey Graham (R-Voice of Reason). He pointed out that Congress still has several options; there's the ongoing investigation from which Comey was just removed; it needs to continue to be vigilant and impartial.
