India call up Karthik for Champions Trophy after Pandey injury

Pandey's injury saw him miss out on Kolkata Knight Riders' victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League [IPL] Eliminator which started on Wednesday but ended past midnight due to a lengthy rain delay. He was part of India's victorious 2013 Champions Trophy campaign, and last played global cricket during the 2014 Asia Cup in Bangladesh. In 14 matches, Karthik scored 361 runs at an impressive average of 36 and strike rate of nearly 140, for The Gujarat Lions.

He was also the best batsman in the last edition of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016-17, scoring total of 607 runs from just 9 innings at with average of 86.71 and an impressive strike-rate of 102.01.

Karthik, who was in the stand-by list, enjoyed a good domestic season.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been called up to India´s squad for next month´s Champions Trophy, replacing the injured Manish Pandey, the country´s cricket board (BCCI) said on Thursday. He last played for India against Afghanistan in the 2014 Asia Cup in Bangladesh. With the win, Tamil Nadu became the first team to win all BCCI domestic tournaments.

India's updated squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, MS Dhoni (wk), Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Dinesh Karthik.
