Goa footbridge collapse: Death toll rises to two, rescue operations on

The police and the fire brigade are now at spot. The recovered body has been identified as that of truck driver Baswraj Malanbar (30) from Sanguem.

There were reports that a person has jumped from the bridge in a suicide attempt and people rushed on the bridge when the old bridge, which was closed for vehicles, collapsed.

"Nine naval divers with boats and associated equipment rush to Curchorem, south Goa bridge collapse site, for search-and-rescue operations", the Navy tweeted.

"More people are feared to have been trapped under the collapsed portion of the bridge", a police officer said. Some saved themselves by staying on the bridge and holding to its side barriers. "But on Thursday, nearly 100 jumped over from the old bridge to this footbridge They invited the calamity", he said. People were using the new pathway which was constructed both the side for the new bridge.

Chief among the Europeans' concerns is the fire risk from placing hundreds of devices with lithium-ion batteries in luggage holds.

A total of fifteen people have been rescued till now and five have been admitted to a hospital. Gauri rescued three youth who had fallen into the river.

District administration officials, police fire bridges and military personnel are still onsite conducting relief operations. "We still don't have exact number of people who could be in the water", he said.

South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar told the Goa Herald newspaper that "it was an unfortunate tragedy".

Public Works Department minister who was onsite supervising rescue operations late on Thursday called the accident a case of "pure bad luck".
