The new owner of bankrupt outdoor gear retailer Gander Mountain wants to keep more than half of the stores open after the liquidation sale ends.

Days later, Gander Mountain's new owner Marcus Lemonis said those reports are untrue, clarifying that at least 70 Gander Mountain locations will remain open. At the same time, the company's website announced that all 126 Gander Mountain stores were closing for good.

At least 70 stores will continue to operate as "Gander Mountain" stores, but Camping World might add small Camping World or Overton store-within-store concepts to them, he said.

He says in a tweet Sunday evening the liquidators have exclusive use of the website till May 18. This month, Gander Mountain and Overton's were acquired by Camping World Holdings, Inc.

"I will not be picking stores that do not have a clear path to profitability", he said.

Employees at the Janesville Gander Mountain location at the Pine Tree Plaza shopping center, 2900 Deerfield Drive, declined to comment Friday.

He said his group bought the company's name and other items but not the inventory. Camping World is reportedly paying about $390 million for Gander.

Over the weekend, news spread of Gander Mountain closing all of its remaining stores, worrying employees and loyal customers that the longtime outdoor specialty brand would soon be no more.

I have continued to post individual updates on what stores are staying, what stores are going, and i will continue to do that. Signs in the front windows said "everything must go", while a large banner on the north side of the building that opened in 2004 said "going out of business". I will not do that under any circumstances.

Camping World operates 125 stores in 36 states, specializing in the sale of recreational vehicles, parts and accessories.

Mr. Lemonis contended that Gander Mountain's "giant mistake" was buying too much inventory, although it was the right kind of merchandise.

Based in St. Paul, Minnesota, Gander Mountain started in Kenosha County in 1960 as a catalog retailer.
