Fun Events Bring Awareness to Safe Boating

Many state and federal laws say kids must wear a life jacket at all times but adults have the option of simply having one onboard to put on if emergency strikes. Saturday, May 20, marks the start of National Safe Boating Week and the DNR wants all MI residents and visitors to have fun while exercising caution and obeying the law.

Today, Friday, May 19, is Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day.

About 85 percent of drownings resulting from boating accidents in the USA are due to people not wearing life jackets.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to you have a safe and fun summer, while out or near the water, please wear your life jacket.

"Much like wearing a seatbelt, putting on a lifejacket during or after an accident happens is too late", said Mike Baron, the recreational boating safety specialist for the Ninth Coast Guard District.

The DNR also recommends a boating safety course for anyone who plans to use a boat or personal watercraft.
