"What Emmanuel Macron is proposing is dynamiting not political reshaping", he said, adding that the LR did not want to confront him but were prepared for political discussion with him. "We need more pragmatism, less bureaucracy and a Europe that protects our citizens". He immediately went to work after the inauguration, visiting wounded soldiers at a hospital outside Paris.

It is the first time in modern French political history that a president has appointed a prime minister from outside his camp without being forced to by a defeat in parliamentary elections.

Macron is to meet Merkel in Berlin later Monday on his first foreign trip, a day after he took office.

"I am happy that we can work together on a common roadmap for the European Union and the Euro Zone", he said.

Collomb, a 69-year-old Socialist, has been a long-time mayor of Lyon. It would be managed by a newly created joint finance minister for the eurozone. Along with politicians, the government will feature new faces from civil society, including black Olympic fencing champion Laura Flessel, renowned environmentalist Nicolas Hulot and publisher Francoise Nyssen.

Macron is also working Tuesday to form a government after naming low-profile, center-right Edouard Philippe as prime minister.

Macron has appealed to the right-wing with his pick for prime minister, but he does not want to stray too far from his left-wing base.

Earlier, Philippe was named by French President Emmanuel Macron as prime minister.

Elysee secretary-general Alexis Kohler made the announcement on the steps of the presidential palace.

Merkel has hailed Macron s election win, saying he carries "the hopes of millions of French people and also many in Germany and across Europe".
