Flynn reportedly told Trump team he was under investigation before inauguration

The Flynn investigation was part of a broader probe into Russian interference in last year's presidential election.

The White House has denied reports that Trump pressed Comey to drop an investigation into Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Trump was furious about the story, one of the officials said, but retreated to the White House residence within 75 minutes of it going online - leaving aides to "figure out how bad the fallout was". "While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", a White House statement said.

Separately, McClatchy reported Wednesday that Flynn declined a request from the Obama administration to approve a Pentagon plan to retake ISIS' de facto capital, Raqqa, with the help of Syrian Kurdish forces - a plan that the government of Turkey had opposed. Trump eventually signed off on the mission, but only after Flynn was sacked. Flynn only registered with the Justice Department as a foreign agent in early March, saying he was paid $530,000 previous year for work that "could be construed to have principally benefited the Republic of Turkey".

In early August, Flynn signed a 90-day contract with Inovo BV, a Dutch company owned by the Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin, who is close to Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The McClatchy report says Flynn's explanation for the decision is not recorded and it was not immediately clear whether he consulted with other members of the transition team. Turkey has long opposed US partnership with Kurdish forces.

Flynn held the position for only 24 days.

And Republican Senator Ben Sasse said yesterday that "there's a lot here that's really scary". In March the Associated Press reported that prior to the inauguration, Flynn's lawyer told Trump's attorneys that he may need to register as a foreign agent.

Surrounded by multiplying questions, President Donald Trump complained on Wednesday that "no politician in history" has been treated worse.

Flynn was paid $45,000 by RT in 2015 for a speech.
