"To ensure the privacy and security of Inmate Manning, no further information concerning the release will be provided", US Army spokesman Dave Foster said in a statement.

Chelsea Manning, formerly known as a male officer called Bradley Manning, was arrested in 2010 after leaking 700,000 military files including a battlefield video and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, the largest leak of classified data in USA history.

"I am merely asking for a first chance to live my life outside the the person I was born to be".

Hawkins has been following Manning's legal team since 2014 as they fought to get her proper treatment for gender dysphoria and, after a pair of suicide attempts in 2016, her release from prison.

More recently, WikiLeaks published Democratic National Committee emails in the weeks leading up to the 8 November US presidential election. "Now hunting for private #healthcare like millions of Americans".

Manning will be allowed to wear her preferred civilian clothing, including women's attire, while on excess leave, Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said.

The Oklahoma native had a hard childhood.

She defended the leaking by saying she had wanted to spark a public debate in the United States about the role of the military and U.S. foreign policy, but later apologised for "hurting the US", saying she had mistakenly believed she could "change the world for the better".

Assange contends the United States should recognize his First Amendment rights as a journalist. "That is not acceptable". Fritz said the process had dragged on for too long and that her client was "shocked" by the decision to drop it now.

WikiLeaks posted a Bitcoin donation address on Twitter early Tuesday with the hopes of bringing in donations in time for Manning's release from prison Wednesday.

She remained housed at Fort Leavenworth, an all-male Army prison, despite her request to transfer to a civilian women's prison. Manning originally comes from Crescent, Oklahoma.

Only one photo of Chelsea exists that we know of, taken just before her arrest and seen above.

She used her military access to leak over 750,000 documents to WikiLeaks, defending her action as an attempt to start a conversation about what she viewed as compromising US tactics and intervention.

$140,000 has been raised on-line to help Manning re-acclimate and start a new life.

"Hugs for Chelsea", a digital album available for a $25 donation, features tracks by artists known for their left-wing activism including Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore. Organized by Evan Greer, a transgender activist and friend of Manning's, the album is available here.
