House Oversight Committee chair Jason Chaffetz questioned the motives behind the Justice Department's appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the FBI's Trump-Russia investigation.

As committee chair, Mr. Chaffetz leads the House panel that investigates waste, fraud, abuse or mismanagement in the executive branch.

Chaffetz had previously said he may leave before the end of his term but did not give any timeline.

"As you know, after careful consideration and long discussion with my wife, Julie, we agree the time has come for us to move on from this part of our life", Chaffetz wrote in a letter to his constituents.

Niederhauser said there has been talk of legislative leaders and the governor reaching out to Chaffetz.

"I started poking around to see what I might be worth and what sort of possibilities are there", Chaffetz said in April.

Comey was sacked last week as the FBI was investigating whether Trump's presidential campaign associates had colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome in his behalf.

The next chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee will have the task of holding the executive branch accountable at a time of internal upheaval within the White House. The most senior member of the committee is Rep. John Duncan (R., Tenn.).

Chaffetz readily went on television news shows to opine on some of the most controversial issues of the day, something his fellow House members from Utah are less inclined to do.

Chaffetz called his nine years in the House a "rare honor and privilege".

At the center of the dispute is Herbert's insistence that he wants to preserve the ability of 3rd Congressional District voters at large to participate and for candidates to qualify for a primary election by collecting signatures. "Quite frankly, I believe the country deserves a woman or a man who is devoid of political taint". "We feel my time in Congress has been well-spent, but it now seems the right time to turn the page".

Hughes had considered running to replace Chaffetz, but he told his fellow Republicans that he decided against it largely so he could push for a special session without being accused of somehow trying to help his own campaign.
