People won't have to wait any more now, the new ZenFone AR will be among the first phones apart from Lenovo to come equipped with Google's AR solution.

Unfortunately, there still aren't any details available about the ZenFone AR's cost, though Asus did confirm that it was looking at a summer launch for the phone in the US. It doesn't need Global Positioning System to do that but it can effectively make AR experiences and apps that take advantage of 3D mapping, environmental recognition, and indoor navigation. Daydream is a high-quality virtual reality (VR) platform that is built into the Android operating system to support VR apps. Through Chrome for Daydream users will be able to browse regular websites, but also get access to Web-based VR and AR experiences.

Tango capabilities means that the phone is capable of motion tracking, depth perception and area learning. Tango technology allows the ZenFone AR to "detect how far it is away from a floor, wall, or an object and understand where it is moving in three-dimensional space", according to Asus. There are now over 100 Tango-capable apps on the Google Play Store.

In case you have been living under a rock all this while and are wondering what Google Tango is all about, here is a minor refresher course. There will be more about what's next in both AR and VR at Google in tomorrow's I/O session.

Theresa May says not taking local election triumph for granted
The favorable results for the Conservatives echoed May's call to the public to give her party the majority ahead of Brexit talks. The Prime Minister said she hopes the election will strengthen her hand in Brexit negotiations with Brussels.

As a refresher, the ZenFone AR runs Android 7.0 on a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED display. Under the hood, the Zenfone AR packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, which the company is optimised for Tango. ASUS worked closely with Qualcomm Technologies engineers and Google to efficiently distribute computer vision workloads.

Tango AR and Daydream VR are still pretty niche when it comes to consumer awareness, especially the former.
